Ever wondered what *really* goes on at NASA's JPL (Jet Propulsion Laboratory) in Pasadena? Looking for something nifty to do this weekend? You're in luck!
The 2009 JPL Open House will take place this Saturday and Sunday, the 2nd & 3rd of May, from 9am-5pm both days.
This popular annual event celebrates JPL's accomplishments with exhibits and demonstrations about the Laboratory's ongoing research and space exploration. Many of the Lab's scientists and engineers are on hand to answer questions about how spacecraft are designed, built, and sent to other planets and outer space, and how scientists utilize space technologies to explore Earth and further Earthbound technologies.
Highlights this year include seeing JPL's next Marsbound spacecraft, the MSL (Mars Science Laboratory), in the Lab's biggest "clean room," visiting the Microdevices Lab where the world of the "ultra-miniature" comes to life, and learning how NASA is involved with researching Earth's greenhouse effect and global climate change.
Besides the numerous exhibits and demos, there are hands-on activities for children and the "Tweet Spot" booth (yes, apparently NASA Twitters, too).
Portions of the event will air live on Ustream TV (http://www.ustream.tv/channel/nasajpl).
